The deck board that made a soft place under one foot
A woman I know from around here called about a deck board that made a soft place under one foot. She said it was not broken exactly,, but it gave a little when she crossed to the back door with laundry. She said she had been stepping around it in her socks because the board felt personal under her heel. I told her a deck should not make you change your walk unless it is covered in ice or one of those toy cars.
When I got there she showed me the spot right away. She put her foot on it and gave it a careful press,, then looked at me like maybe I would say the whole deck was a problem. I got down and checked it by hand because sometimes feet tell the truth but hands tell you where. The board was damp on the underside and a little tired near one screw. It was still holding,, but it had too much give for a place people trust with coffee.
I asked if water sat there after rain. She said it stayed wet longer than the rest and she had wondered if that meant something. It did. The gap between two boards was packed with leaf crumbs, hair-looking roots, and old dirt, so the water could not get out clean. A board that stays wet gets SOFT thinking. I scraped the gap open and the smell came up like a garage towel. She apologized for the deck. I said decks live outside, so they bring outside problems home.
The screw heads were sunk too deep and one had lost its bite. I backed them out, checked the joist, and put in fresh exterior screws with better grip. Then I added a sister block underneath where the old edge wanted to flex. That gave the board something firm to answer to. I did not overdo it because too much pressure in one place can make another place complain. You want steady support,, not a deck that feels bullied.
After that I had her step on it while I watched the line. It stayed flat. She stepped again harder and said it felt better than before, which is a nice thing for a board to hear if boards are listening. I told her to keep the gap clear after leaves fall because wet stuff likes a tight place and then acts surprised when things get loose. She said she could do that part herself. I said GOOD,, because that is the part a person can do with one old screwdriver and a dry afternoon.
Comments are turned off for now. I had a form here once and I do not know where the messages went,, which is not a system.
