The ceiling fan chain that was too short
A ceiling fan pull chain that is too short is not just a chain problem,, it is a dignity problem. People start hopping under it or using a spoon and now the whole room has become a carnival. A chain should not make adults perform.
I fixed one after Christmas one year. I remember because there was still a fake wreath on a chair and a plastic snowman watching me from the table. I do not mind decorations, but I do mind being observed by a snowman while standing on a chair.
The client said guests had been yanking the wrong chain. Light when they wanted fan. Fan when they wanted light. Nobody knowing who was in charge. I said chains need labels or at least different lengths. Two identical chains is how a room creates arguments after dessert.
The ladder would not fit right because of the table, and she said I could just stand on the chair. I did, but I inspected it first because some dining chairs are decorative traps. This one held. I still did not like it. Chairs are for sitting, not believing in.
The fan chain was so short you had to reach up and pinch it with two fingers. That is not a pull chain. That is a test. I added an extender to the fan chain and left the light chain shorter so the body could learn the difference without needing a committee meeting.
She asked if it looked silly. I said no,, it looked reachable. Reachable beats matching. Matching is how people end up waving at the ceiling with a serving spoon. She said her sister had used tongs. I said that proves my point harder than I could.
We tested both chains. Fan chain, fan. Light chain, light. The snowman continued judging but the room worked. I told her if someone still pulled the wrong one after that, the problem had moved from hardware into character.
I also checked the little connector because those bead chains can separate if someone gives them one sideways yank. People yank sideways when they are frustrated, short, or being watched by relatives. A chain should survive normal use,, but not every chain survives family Christmas.
The part I remember is how everybody had adapted to the bad chain without agreeing to it. Spoon, tongs, hopping, wrong switch. That is how a small room becomes a system of nonsense. I wrote CHAIN TOO SHORT in my notes and underlined SHORT because that was the problem and also the insult. A fan should not make people perform REACHING.
I kept the leftover little bead section because throwing away chain feels wrong. Chain is useful until the day it is too short or too long, and then it becomes useful for something else. That is not hoarding. That is inventory with memory. I put it in the tin marked SMALL METAL,, which is not fancy but it is honest.
The fan knew its job after that,, and nobody had to hop around under it like a nervous HERON.
Comments are turned off for now. I had a form here once and I do not know where the messages went,, which is not a system.
