The cabinet hinge that squeaked during breakfast

February 15, 2023 · Cabinets

A squeak at breakfast is worse than an afternoon squeak,, and I stand by that. Afternoon squeaks have context. Morning squeaks get inside the eggs. A person is not ready to hear a cabinet complain before coffee has organized the blood.

I remembered this because my own cabinet made a sound today and I told it we were not starting. It listened for now. That brought back a client with one upper cabinet that squeaked every time she got a mug. Not a long squeak. A small sharp one, which is worse because it repeats like it is proud.

She said it was driving her crazy. I said repetitive sounds can wear a groove in a person. She said her husband said he barely noticed it. I said then he has achieved a level of cabinet peace I do not personally understand.

The hinge was not ruined. It was dirty, dry, and a little loose. That combination makes a sound like a mouse with paperwork. I took the door in my hand and felt the little drag in the swing. You can feel a squeak before it fully speaks sometimes.

Cleaned the hinge, tightened one screw, loosened another that had been over-tightened and making the hinge sit wrong. People think tighter is always better. Tighter can be WRONG. Hardware needs to sit in its place, not get strangled into pretending.

Little oil, then open shut open shut until it behaved. She said I had good hands for that kind of thing. I said my hands mostly know when a screw is lying. That came out more dramatic than intended, but it was accurate enough.

After that, she opened the cabinet and the mug came out quiet. The kitchen felt different right away. Some repairs are not about danger. They are about removing one bad note from a person’s morning so the day does not start with furniture sarcasm.

There was a toaster on the counter with crumbs under it and I remember wanting to move it, but that was not the job. That is the danger of kitchens. They show you 9 other small problems while you are trying to fix one hinge. You have to stay with the hinge or suddenly you are reorganizing a stranger’s morning.

I wrote this one down because the squeak stopped so clean it almost felt rude. One minute the cabinet had an opinion, next minute nothing. She opened it again after I packed up and smiled at the silence. I said that is what it was supposed to sound like,, which is NOTHING. Sometimes NOTHING is the premium result.

I also told her not to spray half a can of mystery lubricant into the hinge if it came back. People do that. Then the cabinet smells like a bicycle shop and dust sticks to everything. A little oil is enough. More is not MORE BETTER. More can become a wet hinge collecting breakfast crumbs, and then the squeak gets friends.

That is why I keep one small oil bottle marked HINGES ONLY,, because breakfast deserves fewer surprises.

Comments are turned off for now. I had a form here once and I do not know where the messages went,, which is not a system.
