The basement light that only worked when it felt like it
I do not like electricity pretending to be a mood. Either work,, or do not work. This was a basement pull-chain light that came on only if you asked it with the right wrist angle, which is not a system. That is a séance with wiring.
I remembered it when my own basement light flickered once today. It was just the bulb not seated right, but for a second my brain opened the whole file. Basements already have a negotiating advantage because they are below you and full of old boxes. They do not need uncertain lighting too.
The client said it scared her because sometimes she would pull and nothing happened. I said that is fair. Darkness after a click is different from normal darkness. Normal darkness minds its business. Failed-switch darkness feels like the house answered no.
I turned the breaker off, checked twice, and then checked again because electricity is not impressed by confidence. The fixture was old, the pull chain was worn, and the little mechanism inside had gotten picky. People get sentimental about old fixtures until they realize the fixture is choosing when they can see the laundry sink.
She stood at the stairs and said tell me if you need me. I said I need you not to turn the breaker on. That was not rude. That was the whole job description for the person near the stairs. She said fair enough and stayed put.
Changing the fixture was simple in the way electrical things are simple after you have already made them safe. Before that, nothing is simple. Wires were connected properly, box was fine, and the new fixture sat where the old one had been without making a speech.
When the breaker came back on, I pulled the chain and the light came on every time. I did it 6 times because a basement needs evidence. She said that was plenty. I said no,, plenty is when the light quits acting like it has feelings.
There was a shelf of canned tomatoes near the panel and I remember thinking nobody should keep tomatoes that close to electricity, even though there is no rule against it that I know of. Basements make strange neighbors out of things. Wires, laundry, Christmas boxes, soup. All of it down there together waiting for a bulb to act NORMAL.
After it worked, the client went down the stairs herself and pulled the chain. That mattered more than me pulling it. A repair is not finished until the person who lives there can use it without making the old worried face. She pulled once, light. Pulled again, dark. Pulled again, light. I said good,, now the basement has to answer properly.
I also changed the bulb because an old bulb in a new fixture is how people create superstition. The bulb was probably fine, but probably is not a lighting plan. She kept the old one for somewhere else. I did not argue. People have bulb hierarchies in their houses,, and I try not to disturb systems that are not actively DANGEROUS.
