The back step that made a soft sound
A step can look fine,, and still make a soft sound. That is why I listen. Paint is a liar if you let it talk first. It will sit there glossy and polite while the board underneath is thinking about giving up.
I remembered this because Earl once stepped through a porch board and blamed the shoe. I still think about that. A shoe can betray you in many ways, but it usually does not eat a porch. That was rot, not footwear, and everybody knew it except Earl for about 3 minutes.
This job was a back step by a kitchen door. The client said it felt funny. I stepped on it once and said yes, that is a bad little note. It did not crack. It did not drop. It made a soft sound, which is worse because soft sounds make people doubt themselves.
I got down and looked under the lip. The paint was holding the story together from the top, but underneath the support piece had gone punky near the end. That is a word Dad used. Punky. Means wood that is still shaped like wood but has lost its intentions.
I had to pull the board, check underneath, replace a support piece, and put it back so nobody went through it carrying soup or whatever people carry out back. She said she usually took trash that way. I said trash is lighter than soup but still not worth a broken ankle.
She watched from the door and asked if she should have noticed sooner. I said maybe,, but steps are sneaky because people use them while thinking about other things. Nobody walks down a step and says today I will inspect the load path. That would be strange even for me.
When it was solid again, I stepped on it hard a few times. No soft sound. She did too, lighter than me, then smiled like the step had apologized. I told her paint can wait, but listening cannot. If a step changes its voice, believe it.
The old support piece came out in two parts even though it looked like one piece from the outside. That is the part people do not see. A step can keep its shape from habit. Then one rainy week or one heavy cooler comes along and the habit ends fast.
I wrote this job down because the sound was the whole clue. No dramatic crack, no big sag, just one soft note under the heel. Dad would have said LISTEN FIRST, and he would have been right in that irritating way dads can be after they are not standing there. A step does not have to shout to be telling the truth,, and that one was telling it.
I also checked the step below it because steps like to fail in families. That one was fine. I still wrote it down. GOOD LOWER STEP. That may look unnecessary in a notebook, but later when I wonder if I checked, there it is. A note can keep a man’s brain from reopening a job at midnight,, which is valuable.
