A screen door closer that slapped
Screen doors get violent,, when that little closer cylinder loses its manners. They start slapping shut like somebody leaving a meeting mad. People call it just a screen door, but if it hits you with groceries in your hand, it is now a workplace safety issue in your own house.
I heard one down the street today. Same sound. Metal, spring, disrespect. It reminded me of a porch where the door was hitting hard enough to make the wreath jump. A wreath should not have to brace itself every time someone comes home.
The woman said every time she carried groceries in, it got her from behind. I said that is not a safe door then. She laughed, but I meant it. Doors are allowed to close. They are not allowed to chase.
The closer was not broken all the way. It was just set wrong and sticky at the wrong part of the travel. That is common. People twist the little screw once, nothing obvious happens, then they twist it a lot and now the door has a personality disorder.
I adjusted the screw, tested it, adjusted again, tested again. Open. Let go. Watch. A closer will lie the first two times because it knows you are watching. Then the wind gets involved and you find out what it really believes. I had to clean the bracket too because paint had thickened around it like old frosting.
She stood inside holding a bag of cans and said tell me when. I said go ahead,, but not fast. We tested it with her walking through because a door has to pass the actual life test. It closed behind her without smacking anything. That is the goal. Not graceful. Just not hostile.
I told her if it starts slapping again, do not yank the arm loose and let it dangle. People do that. Then the door swings free and acts like it is at a barn dance. Hardware needs discipline before it starts entertaining itself.
The other thing was the latch plate. It had a shiny mark where the door hit too hard and bounced. A slapping closer does not just slap people,, it teaches the whole door to arrive wrong. I filed the burr a little because I could see it and once I see a burr, it becomes part of my day.
She said the porch felt quieter after. That is a good result. Not every repair announces itself by looking new. Sometimes the best repair is when the house stops making a threat behind your back. I wrote it down because a door that quits attacking groceries is SERVICE, even if nobody puts that on a business card.
I wrote the closer adjustment down because those little screws look simple but they are moody. A quarter turn can change a porch. A full turn can start a fight. That door needed a quarter turn and a cleaning,, not a new cylinder, not a lecture, and definitely not somebody removing the arm and calling it fixed.
