A medicine cabinet mirror that sat crooked
A crooked mirror will make a man look more tired than he earned,, which is not fair before breakfast. That is not vanity. That is measurement. Some things can be off a quarter inch and still take over the whole room because the eye keeps saluting the mistake.
I saw myself in a store window today and it was not a good angle. That reminded me of a medicine cabinet mirror that sat crooked above a sink. The client said her husband could not see it. I said some people cannot hear a level either. That was not against him. It was just information.
The cabinet was not falling. That makes it harder to explain. If something is falling, everyone agrees. If something is crooked, now the room separates into people who see it and people who say it is fine with the confidence of a bad tape measure.
I loosened the screws and checked the wall. Old holes were a little worn out, and one side had settled enough to make the mirror look like it was judging the toothbrush cup. She stood behind me and said she knew it was silly. I said it is not silly if you see it every morning. Repetition can make a small wrongness get LOUD.
Had to shim one side, tighten slow, and keep checking because mirrors make you look at yourself while you work, which is not helpful. I do not need to watch my own face concentrate. Nobody does. The cabinet wanted to shift when the screw caught, so I had to hold it steady with my shoulder and start again.
She said I had patience. I said no,, I just know crooked things get worse if you let them win the first round. There is a difference. Patience sounds noble. This was more like not trusting the wall.
When it sat level, the sink looked calmer. That is a real thing. A room can calm down when the line is right. Her husband came by and said he guessed it did look better. I did not say anything because victory does not need a speech in a bathroom.
There was a tiny rust ring on the sink from a shaving can and I remember that more than I should. The mirror was the job, but the rust ring kept lining up with the crooked edge in a way that made the whole sink look tired. Rooms can gang up on you,, visually.
After I got home I checked my own bathroom mirror with a level. It was fine, but I did not trust it right away. That is what some jobs do. They put suspicion in your hand. I wrote this one down because a quarter inch can become a WHOLE MOOD if it is above the place where people brush their teeth and make morning faces.
I also remember the medicine cabinet had three little shelves inside and only one was sitting straight. I did not fix those because they were not the job, but they looked at me the whole time. That is how one crooked thing recruits other crooked things. I left before the shelves could ask for a meeting,, because the mirror was LEVEL and a man has to know when to quit.
Comments are turned off for now. I had a form here once and I do not know where the messages went,, which is not a system.
